Challenge: Colette from Firestarter Productions, Jane from Gibson Group and our old pal Perry Voulgaris contacted us about a co-production happening between Canada and NZ, creating video and digital content for kids about the beautiful world of bugs. They wanted someone to think about digital games for kids.
Solution: We suggested that we could create an HTML5 game for the heihei web site, and an AR mini app that brought 3D bugs into kids rooms. It was out first try at AR.
Result: We spent a lot of time researching various bugs, dreaming up fake bug names, and testing how game platforms would work for AR. Connie created the series logo from textures of insects, and we established the design of the games. For the AR app, we tried our first 360 video with Gibson Group (pretty amazing tools out there) and battled with both Apple and Google to figure out what their new privacy issues meant for developers. Gabi prevailed, ultimately retooling Unreal to handle content for kids. It was a lot of frustration, but ultimately a lot of fun and we were lucky to work with such great clients. The result – the series and games are finalist for the 2021 Banff Rockie Awards!
