Challenge: Our friends from our favourite animal charity ( go, RedRover!) have a magazine that is all about kindness towards animals. They have a good subscription base for their paper mag, but thought it would be good to find a way to bring elements of the magazine online.
Solution: We thought that we could help by building different game engines that they could customize each issue. The crossword seemed like a good place to start.
Result: We teamed the amazing Joan Lee with our old friend Trevor Ross, who brought his superb attention to detail and his deep understanding of kids’ digital media to the project, and the result is incredible. Check out the little bits here – how errors are handled, different difficulty levels, settings, and a way to collect rewards that can be used towards clues. Despite some setbacks, including learning just how ridiculously hard it is to make a crossword generator (cruciverbalists exist, but think of the math involved!), the game is a fun feature on the Kind News website. As early Nat Geo World readers, we can’t tell you what a great feeling it is to promote reading, animal kindness, and learning together with the RedRover team.
